Stephen Scharper will be joining us! Celebration of lives in places: Jim Profit and Thomas Berry.
Cedar Circle Sunday Afternoons are reflective experiences with other like-spirited individuals who desire to slow down, and listen to their own soul with the soul of the land at Ignatius Jesuit Centre.
Each ninety-minute gathering is unique, the common denominator being the attentive exploration of connections between nature, individuals and community. Components include contemplative practices, land-basing learning, communal creativity, meaningful conversation and artistic expression. The land is always met as partner and teacher. Discovery is sought.
Every third Sunday of the month between 2:30-4 pm, the gatherings take place both outside and in, depending on the clemency of the weather.

Cultural historian and eco-theologian, Thomas Berry, wrote and taught eloquently of Earth as “a community of subjects, not a collection of objects”. The universe, according to Berry, “celebrates itself in every mode of being”, which in the human mode occurs through conscious self-awareness. May’s Cedar Circle is dedicated to the conscious celebration of Berry’s influence on the late Jim Profit, former director of the Ignatius Jesuit Centre, who championed its eco-spiritual mission. Jim’s capacity to build community resulted in the Old Growth Forest Project, the Ignatius Farm CSA, the Ecology Project, and many other environmental and social initiatives.
Author, professor at U of Toronto’s School of the Environment, and friend both of Jim and Thomas Berry, Stephen Scharper will present some of their thought and share some personal stories. The circle will open to other friends and admirers to give voice to memories. We’ll spend some time out on the land so loved by Jim.
After the Circle, the celebration will continue with a potluck dinner. Please bring some food or drink to share with other Cedar goers.
